FIFA
WWC 2023 Promo

THE ASK
The ask was to create a pre-tournament promo using FIFA’s extensive archive of sports footage and shape it into something fresh, emotional, and high-impact. From the outset, the creative team was genuinely excited by the idea of moving beyond the usual promo formula into crafting something more artistic, more human, and more moving.
Rather than leaning only on highlight moments, we were challenged to build a bigger narrative around the archive – one that could speak to legacy, community, and future generations. Our idea centred on young girls training, pushing themselves, and ultimately coming together to be welcomed by their Elders. A story about connection, effort, and stepping into something bigger than yourself.

Who we were speaking to (and the challenges)
The biggest hurdle was wrangling hundreds of hours of archival football footage and shaping it into a cohesive, believable story. With such a vast library to work from, the challenge wasn’t finding great moments – it was choosing the right ones that could serve a clear narrative rather than feel like a highlight reel.
We needed to pull together footage that supported the emotional journey of the film, matched pacing and tone, and could live seamlessly alongside newly shot material. Every frame had to earn its place, so the story felt intentional, not assembled.
We also needed to speak to two host nations and a truly global audience, all while keeping things authentic, respectful, and emotionally resonant.
And because FIFA content lives everywhere, from broadcast, social, stadium screens, to live events, the piece had to be adaptable across formats and platforms. High enough fidelity to feel “world-class,” flexible enough to fit anywhere.
The creative approach
We kicked off with one clear idea: bring two sister nations together. With Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand co-hosting for the very first time, we wanted the story to reflect that rare, shared moment. Two countries. Two respected cultures. Two elders calling the youth forward.
The approach unfolded as a parallel between past and future, tradition and momentum. It blended:
- Two respected Elders – one from each nation – leading a Smoking Ceremony and a Pōwhiri. Their expressions and gestures carry deep cultural weight, like a call sent out across two lands.
- Two young women answering that call. From different walks of life, they train, run, and play with fierce determination, their movement acting as a living response to the Elders’ welcome.
- Archival FIFA footage threaded through the story – iconic goals, raw emotion, shared triumph and heartbreak – grounding the present in the legacy of the game.
- Layered sound design: ambient ocean waves, ceremonial calls, pounding footfalls, the solid thud of a football, and the rising roar of a stadium building rhythm, scale, and energy.

THE FINAL RESULT
The result is something that hits you in the gut as much as it pleases the eye.
We wanted tension and release. The young women feel unstoppable as the sound and pace surge around them, momentum building with every stride, yet when they meet the Elders, everything slows down. It’s a moment of respect, awe, and human connection. A quiet reminder that this tournament is far more than goals and scorelines.
Music and sound moved as one: cinematic in scale, grounded in real-world texture. Every beat, every breath, every rising cheer pulls the audience deeper into the story of two nations standing side by side, calling the world to come together.
How we partnered with the client
One of the things that made this project run so smoothly was the way we collaborated with FIFA. They gave us access to their incredible archival footage library, which let us weave in historic goals, celebrations, and unforgettable moments without skipping a beat. Having those assets at our fingertips meant we could create a rich, layered story that connected the past with the present.
We set up a feedback loop that kept everyone in sync and moving quickly. Regular check-ins, quick turnarounds, and a clear plan for each round of edits meant there were no surprises, just a steady, collaborative rhythm. We also gave gentle reminders ahead of schedule to make sure the right people were standing by for approvals, which kept the project flowing without any last-minute scrambles.
The result was a partnership that was both efficient and enjoyable, the kind of collaboration that lets creativity thrive.

What we delivered (and why it mattered)
We delivered a cinematic pre-tournament trailer that honoured the cultures of the host nations, championed women’s empowerment, and built global anticipation for one of sport’s biggest moments. It worked because it didn’t rely on star power; it relied on story. It connected grassroots to greatness, legacy to future, community to world stage. And it showcased what Monster & Bear does best – flexing creatively and technically, pulling together big-screen visuals with broadcast-ready edit suites, and grounding everything in human, honest storytelling. A true hybrid production: crafted with heart, made under one roof, and built to unite fans across the world.
